Against the background of rising population figures and insufficient (non-agricultural) employment opportunities, the employment of young people in rural areas represents a central challenge for Africa. This is also the case for Malawi: The population is very young (44 per cent younger than 15years; 34 per cent aged between 15 and 35 years) and is expected double until 2050 (43.2 million compared to 17.5 million in 2018). Currently, more than 80 % of the population live inrural areas and 88 % of the labour force work in agriculture.

Due to limited employment opportunities in the manufacturing and service sectors, the agricultural and food industry must continue to provide a large proportion of the jobs and income opportunities for the young generation in the short and medium term. It is estimated that food demand will increase by 55 % due to a growing population and urbanization by 2030. Professionalization of smallholder farming, domestic food processing as well as increasing digitalisation of the agricultural sector offer growth and employment potential especially for the young generation. However, effective approaches to employment promotion in rural areas, especially for young people, have not yet been properly identified,
sufficiently piloted and institutionalized in the development strategies of partner countries (core problem). The module objective for the country package Malawi of the global project “Employment in rural areas with focus on youth” (in short: Rural youth employment – RYE) therefore is: “The training and employment situation in rural areas has improved, especially for young people”.
